Asian Golf Monthly Reports that Colin Montgomerie holds hopes for his new Montgomerie Links course in Vietnam to host a European Tour event in the future.
The magazine quotes Monty during the course opening as saying ‘the way it’s set up you could almost play a tournament here now.’ This year’s Ryder Cup captain added that ‘the European Tour has expanded in Asia and wouldn’t it be great if Vietnam could join in.’
What’s staggering about the report, however, is the following sentence ‘Montgomerie, who last visited the course in the latter stages of the construction process some two years ago, was impressed by the way in which the course makes the most of the site’s natural dune-strewn topography.’ Monty said ‘It’s very humbling to come to a different country and see one’s name attached to a facility as marvelous as this…The course has turned out even better than we had envisioned when we designed it.’
For a so-called ‘designer’ to go two years between construction and course completion displays a level of dedication to the craft that won’t surprise anyone who follows these things closely, but should raise alarm bells for those who believe Monty actually takes course creation seriously.
