For years my gripe with golf in China, was that moderately talented designers were prolific in the country while the really gifted architects were unable to get their foot in the door. The worm has definitely started turning, with good architects winning plum jobs and the best new Chinese courses much better than those thrown up in previous years.

Leading the way is the new Lava Fields course at the Mission Hills Resort on Hainan Island. Designed by Brian Curley, the mastermind behind 9 other courses here, Lava Fields features the rare (for China) mix of high-quality and sophisticated shaping with really interesting ground movement and strategic design. It’s the best course that I’ve seen in China, and its success serves to condemn those in the industry all too fond of telling me that you can’t create great golf here.

the best course in Hainan by far in The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula. Mission Hills is mass construction – The Dunes is quality design by world class team. You should go see for yourself. Pete
Pete,
Darius was there, read his comments on the course. The Dunes at Shenzhou Is a spectacular golf course, the dunes environment that was “created” by the team on-site is really amazing, the ocean, the setting… its incredible, perhaps only 1 up-ed by the site Coore & Crenshaw have to work with in Boao. But the golf course features are lacking: pancake flat greens and boring fairways littered with catch basins were disappointing.
Also note, Golf Magazine had the Blackstone course at Mission Hills ranked #2 international golf course for 2010, closely followed by The Dunes at #3. Both great courses but Mission Hills is just a touch above, all around complete design, just lacking the stunning ocean setting.
