That the Ipswich Golf Club finds itself in financial trouble will surprise few, especially those familiar with the club's recently 'upgraded' Wayne Grady golf course. Golf clubs across southeast Queensland have been struggling in recent times due to the economic downturn in the state, and it seems there are a number in strife around the Ipswich area. While sad to hear they are in trouble, you have to give club chairman Paul Morris credit for thinking outside the box and suggesting they need to offer an alternative 'night sport' in order to succeed.

According to reliable industry sources plans have been confirmed for the new private St Andrews Beach golf course on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Named St Andrews Private Golf Club, the layout will be designed by veteran architect Ross Perrett and sit alongside the existing Tom Doak-designed St Andrews Beach golf course. The club will have a limited membership cap of just 281, and cost more than $90,000 to join. Given that Victorian golfers can join the nearby 54-hole National Golf Club for less than $10,000, this seems a high-risk venture.

Golf Monthly Magazine in the United Kingdom has released its 2012 ranking of the Top 100 golf courses in the British Isles. The list follows hot on the heels of the Golf World debacle, where the unopened Trump International Scotland course was ranked 8th in the UK/Ireland and ahead of Royal Dornoch and Carnoustie. While Golf Monthly's ranking seems more respectable on the surface, there remain a number of curiosities such as Royal Lytham (7) ahead of Royal Dornoch (9) and Waterville (11) ahead of both Royal Portrush (12) and Ballybunion (13). Ranking Old Head (33) above Swinley Forest (34) also fails the common sense test.

In news that will hardly shock observers of the Asian golf industry, it was announced this week that organizers of the Asia Pacific Golf Summit will yet again honor Jack Nicklaus at their annual talkfest. This will be the fourth Summit in a row that has feted the Golden Bear, this time with the great man receiving the newly formed Global Legacy Award. For those with short memories, his previous accolades include the inaugural Asia Pacific Lifetime Achievement Award as well as induction into the inaugural class of the Asia Pacific Golf Hall of Fame.

While thinking up new and creative ways of celebrating Nicklaus is part of the business of the Asia Pacific Golf Group, disclosing conflicts of interest clearly isn't. It should come as no surprise to learn that Nicklaus Design is a business partner of this year’s Summit.

Harrison is the man charged with building a world-class golf course on a 14,000-acre estate at the southern tip of the sparsely populated Scottish island. Harrison has described the site as the most beautiful he has ever seen during his time in golf, which is quite an endorsement given some of the projects he worked on whilst in charge of Greg Norman's Australasian design business.

For as long as we can remember, The National Golf Club of Canada has held the number 1 spot in the biennial rankings, and once again in 2012 the Fazio and Fazio creation tops the list. Next is a pair of championship ready classics, St George's and Hamilton, followed by the Stanley Thompson foursome of Jasper Park, Capilano, Highlands Links and Banff Springs. While all are worthy of praise, the placement of Highlands Links down in 6th place does surprise.

Promising news from the New South Wales Hunter Valley last week, that Capital Corporation's proposed new $150 million golf and recreation resort in Cessnock is still on the cards.

As reported in local newspaper, 'The Advertiser', the new golf course will be designed by Jack Nicklaus, and will be accompanied by a five-star resort and prestigious residential subdivision. The property is located directly adjacent to the Greg Norman 'designed' Vintage development.

What's interesting about this latest news from Capital Corporation, is that according to the company's Managing Director Greg Taylor, Nicklaus himself picked the site and will be creating one of 'his 25 unique signature clubs around the world.'

The organizing committee for the 2016 Olympic games have announced that eight finalists have been selected for its golf course design contest. The creative commercial pairings of Greg Norman with Lorena Ochoa and Jack Nicklaus with Annika Sorrenstam have paid off, for now anyway, with both teams shortlisted. Also on the shortlist is the Australian signature design company Thomson Perrett, who have announced that 7 times LPGA major winner Karrie Webb will be part of their design team should the company win the Olympic contract. Despite no evidence at all that a design company teaming with an LPGA superstar can/will produce a quality golf course, it has clearly become fashionable to champion gender equality by tacking a famous female onto your design bid. Others in contention are fellow signature design companies, Gary Player Design and Robert Trent Jones II as well as golf course architects Martin Hawtree, Tom Doak and Gil Hanse.

Earlier this week, the Bonnie Doon Golf Club welcomed defending Australian Open Champion Geoff Ogilvy back to the club to inspect the works being carried out by his design company Ogilvy Clayton Golf Design.

Ogilvy Clayton began work on a major redevelopment of the Bonnie Doon GC in May, and with Stage One of the project nearing completion, Ogilvy escorted journalists and members of the golfing media on a walking tour of the new works. Commenting on progress made to this point, Ogilvy noted that, "It's a pretty stunning piece of land with some great stuff growing out of it. It's pretty exciting to get on the ground and see stuff like that. It's pretty fun."

Observing from afar, the lashing dished out to Cog Hill and its redesign architect Rees Jones during the recent BMW Championship seemed astonishing. I'm not suggesting the criticism was unwarranted in any way, but I am surprised at the tone of some of the vitriol and, more importantly, the quarters from which it came.

Geoff Ogilvy started the ball rolling the fortnight earlier, when he birdied the 72nd hole in Boston to sneak into the BMW field in 69th position (out of a field of 70). Acknowledging his good fortune and clutch play, Ogilvy sarcastically noted that it meant he was, 'rewarded with a trip to Cog Hill.'

Ogilvy is an impassioned student of golf course design, and the player least likely to 'get' the design style of Cog Hill architect Rees Jones. His criticism of Jones and his design work has been consistent over the years. Mild but consistent.

This time, however, Ogilvy was not only joined by a chorus of other players damning the tweaked Rees Jones layout, he was well and truly overshadowed by a number of bitter attacks.

It was during a recent conversation with the President of a prominent metropolitan golf club that I realised my fears about the introduction of the US slope rating system here were well founded.

The results can be seen here below, in a photograph that forms part of its Pro Golf Exposed campaign!

Following from the ‘love-fest’ of previous years, where the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Peter Thomson, Greg Norman and Annika Sorenstam have been feted for their ‘services to golf’, this year it’s apparently Jacklin’s turn to be adulated as he spruiks for course design work. In making his announcement, publisher Mike Sebastian described Jacklin as a 'design revolutionary'.....

The magazine claims that Woods has already received more than $55 million from UAE developer Tatweer, despite just six holes being built and the remainder now on hold indefinitely. Apparently Woods was to receive another $14 million upon completion of the project, and would have received an additional $28.8 million had a second course been commissioned.
