Wannamoisett Country Club

USA, Rhode Island
6.5 (8)
Designer: Donald Ross
Course Opened: 1898

One of Donald Ross’s earliest New England designs, Wannamoisett is located in the suburbs of Providence, Rhode Island, and remains a well preserved, though greener, testament to his unquestionable design capabilities. From first glance the site appears unspectacular, the gentle gradient up the 1st fairway and back toward the clubhouse on the 2nd and 9th belies some of the more memorable terrain through other parts of the property. A central hill is very well used in the routing, becoming a key part of the central sections of both nines. Generally the fairways are broad and open, the greens large and well constructed.

Some of the highlights include great falling approach shots into the 2nd and 9th greens, the short, rolling 7th and the creative green sites at the start of the back nine – the 11th an inverted saucer in shape and the 12th played into a bowl cut atop a small rise. The short 15th is also very fine, and an archetypal Ross green site set on a wide plateau and with traps cut into the slopes on either side at the front.
