The World’s largest golf club, Mission Hills in China, has announced plans to offer armchair architects the opportunity to design three holes on its forthcoming Icon Course, which will be built in 2011 at the incredible new 5-star Mission Hills Resort on Hainan Island.

Lead architect Brian Curley is arguably the most daring and inventive designer since Pete Dye, and he is asking contestants in the Fantasy Hole Competition to submit ideas for a par three, par four and par five hole. Curley wants the Icon Course to make a big visual impression, and is seeking entries that are as radical and ‘out there’ as possible.

As the press release from Mission Hills states, ‘the Icon Course will feature holes as intrepid and extreme as any ever designed. Keeping with this theme, entries will be evaluated largely on creativity. Outside-the-box concepts are highly encouraged – for instance, inspiration may be drawn from inanimate objects, animals or famous global landmarks. Designs must also accommodate playability, construction-feasibility and other criteria.’

Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Dr. Ken Chu says that “Limitless imagination is paramount here, as our Icon Course will feature holes inspired by Mission Hills’ position at the forefront of golf’s global explosion.” Brian Curley adds that entrants must ‘ingeniously channel their artistic impulses.... Submit your dream hole or holes – wild-and-wacky preferred – and we’ll build it for you.’

Located on exotic Hainan Island, Mission Hills Haikou is only 15 minutes from the Airport and already features 10 golf courses, 518 tastefully-appointed guest rooms, 12 world class restaurants, a spa oasis, therapeutic natural mineral spring and the island’s only aquatic theme park.

It’s not quite Dr. MacKenzie and the Country Life Magazine competition, but for frustrated architects it’s an opportunity to get their design ideas in front of an architect unafraid to push the envelope. Beyond the prestige of having their holes built, winners also receive a four-day stay at the resort along with three close friends.

It will be fascinating to see which holes are chosen, and how the course comes together.
