Top 100 Golf Courses in the World - GOLF Magazine 2011

The 2011 GOLF Magazine World Top 100 ranking list has been released, and yet again there are numerous contentious rankings and omissions. The fact courses like Oitavos Dunes in Portugal and Nine Bridges in South Korea have not only stayed on the list, but improved their ranking, while a superior modern layout like National Moonah is yet again overlooked does little for this panel's credibility. Neither does a number like 92 alongside Swinley Forest, especially when one compares this English heathland gem with similar aged American layouts like Camargo, Shoreacres, Southern Hills, Baltusrol x 2, Inverness and Medinah, which are all ranked well above Swinley.

Should GOLF Magazine be seriously interested in a proper assessment of the world's best golf courses, or simply keen to improve its ranking process, there clearly needs to be a clean-out of its Top 100 panel. There are some fine people on this panel, but far too many with both negative and positive bias and far too few who actually travel extensively for golf.
