Course Opened:

Pecanwood is a Nicklaus Design estate course located near the edge of the immense Hartebeesport Dam. The 13th hole here actually touches the water and plays across a corner of the dam, but the rest of the holes are essentially carved through houses. Unfortunately, design-wise, there is absolutely nothing new here at all, holes lack interest or originality and seem to be created remotely without any feel for the native terrain.

One feature of the course are the huge expanses of sand, which are mostly flat and floral in shape and easy to escape from if a decent player. The use of these bunkers is rarely strategic, instead the traps are seemingly there to add to the look of a hole and perhaps prevent play toward the houses.

This was hardly a glamorous site, but the only visible shaping done here was behind the greens or in the fairway bunkers with their faces flashed into mounds. As a result the layout lacks appeal visually, it’s essentially a wide, open, flat estate course with few trees, few exciting holes and plenty of home sites.
