Royal Zoute

Koninklijke Golf Club Oostende - Royal Ostend

Belgium, East Belgium
5.3 (3)
Designer: Martin Hawtree
Course Opened: 1903

Stretching partly alongside the coastal dunes of Belgium, the Royal Ostend Golf Club was founded in 1903 and initially created by little known designer Seymour Dunn. The round starts inland of a major road that must be crossed several times, most notably when entering and leaving the best portion of the property - from holes 5 through 10. These holes are beachside of the road and touch large dunes that separate the beach from the golf. The layout heads toward one particularly big sand structure that golfers then climb and tee off down toward the drop kick par three 8th.

Best links moments here are the par three 6th and the green site on the 7th. The rest features a mix of deep revetted bunkers and shallow sand scrapes, while most of the greens are quite dull without much internal movement or shapely form. Royal Ostend is almost a links, it was upgraded by Martin Hawtree in 1990 though we doubt he uses examples of work done here in any of his promotional material.
