Frankfurter Golf Club

Germany, Central Germany, Frankfurt
6.3 (4)
Designer: Harry S. Colt
Course Opened: 1913

One of the oldest clubs in Germany, the Frankfurter golf course is built through a forest only a mile or two from the center of Frankfurt. Originally designed by Harry Colt, the layout was tinkered with in 2002 when German architect Kurt Rossknecht added some back tees and altered the bunkering - both moving some traps and converting their style to a more 'modern' appearance. The loss of the Colt bunker shapes over the years here has been tragic, the fairway traps now shallow and often mere scrapes in the ground - a strategic hole like the 2nd without a punishing bunker on the right to flirt with loses any of its magic.

The layout is very flat through the first 13 holes, with the final five by contrast quite hilly. Aside from terrific short holes, there isn't much to recommend early. The 11th is a fine par three played to a small green cut into a slight rise, the target brilliantly shaped to feed well struck balls back onto the putting surface and others down into perilous positions. The 4th is another excellent par three, this time shorter and completely flat yet with a clever putting target that is shallow and perfectly arranged between front traps and back chipping hollows.

Sadly the rest of the holes are quite average at Frankfurter, although the setting is pleasant enough and there is no doubt that with sensible restoration of the bunkers and some greens it would become a terrific place to golf.
